Yawn on the Run

I wrote a book.

I'm currently in the class Children's Literature and I love it. Every morning before class Dr. Pennington reads a chapter from a Newbery award winner while we all nestle down with our coffee and tea to listen. We then jump into the lesson for the day whether that be on picture books, fantasy books, or historical fiction. I've learned quite a bit about children's literature from that class and it has inspired me to make a dense reading list to tack over the summer. It has also inspired me to begin collecting books for my own classroom one day.

But as much as I love learning about the various types of children's literature, there was one assignment that I couldn't wait to do. That assignment: write a children's book.

When I was four I went on a crazy book writing spree. I remember the day it happened because, to me, it was the best thing since sliced bread. Mom was pregnant at the time with Ian and I was having nap time. I'd been having nap time since I was little and it was supposed to be for the purpose of, well, napping. But I got bored with sleeping after a while and did everything else I could think of while sitting in bed. I said the alphabet backwards as fast as I could, I tried to curl all my toes but one, and I made up stories in my mind. Finally, one day Mom let me read books to myself during nap time. I loved it! I would curl up in bed with my little Fisher Price® tape recorder and read the stories with as much enthusiasm as I could muster. I read them as if I was reading to an audience.

For some reason my nap time got moved to the living room where I would sit quietly on a couch and read the books silently to myself. While I would read Mom would try to sleep on the couch next to mine. She relished the quiet nap time and unfortunately my page turning was too loud for her. One day Mom told me that the page turning was not helping her sleep so she set me up at the table with crayons and a stack of white paper. I couldn't have been happier. This change was the best.

Instead of drawing pictures on the paper, I wrote out all the stories in my mind and drew pictures to accompany them. I loved it. I wrote a lot of little books during that time, but life went on and the books ended up in a bucket in a shed somewhere in Missouri. As for my writing, I wrote papers for school and sporadic blog posts, but that was it.

Until I got the assignment to write a children's book. It came at just the right time too. All summer I'd been thinking of the story I would write if I had to write a children's book. It would be about a yawn that covered the world (because, after all, yawns are contagious). And it would rhyme. I am a huge Dr. Seuss fan because I love the sound and flow of his books. I love that after I read any of his books I start thinking in rhyme and rhythm. I wanted to incorporate that into my story.

So a few weeks ago I set out to write my book. It took me an afternoon to get the story line penned out. After reading it to several friends (and getting an immense amount of encouragement about it!) I looked for someone to illustrate it for me. I tried, ohhh did I try, but my artistic abilities are a bit on the low side. Then came Jillian Chupp. I emailed her my story and she said she would love to illustrate it. I got her illustrations last week and put the book together. I could not have been happier! They were perfect! I wanted to show off her drawings to everyone. I love them!

This past week in my children's literature class I got to present my book to the class. Damarise and Micah sat in on my class to listen to me read my book. I felt so loved! Nobody else had friends and family come in to listen to them read. I felt so special and cared for. They are such a blessing!

I have felt very blessed and encouraged by my friends through writing this book. It was definitely helped along by many people. Megan helped me with one of the lines and listened to me stumble along through the first few lines (I read it out loud over and over again to her while she tried to study in my room). Micah was enthusiastic about my book, told everyone about it, and helped me change some of the words.  Damarise encouraged me in saying she wanted it to be published. Kevin, Virginia, and Davey all listened to my book and gave me some of the sweetest compliments. Janessa told me it was great and told me to ask Jillian to illustrate it. Dad and Mom told me they liked it. Jillian made it come alive. And my classmates encouraged me after I read it. I feel so blessed by all the encouragement I've gotten from my friends and family. I told Damarise after I read my book in class that I just wanted to cry (a happy cry!) because I was so thankful for everyone's encouragement and support. It was just too sweet and kind!

Yawn on the Run was a fun project and I'm so thankful I got to do it. Maybe one day I'll get around to publishing this book. But in the meantime, if you want to read it you'll have to find me and I can read it to you.

Dos and Don'ts

  1. Do: go to the store to buy food to survive on for Easter Break.
Don't: not look closely at the label on the Skim Milk container and accidentally buy Skim Buttermilk.
  2. Do: Play in fountains at Coolidge with friends.
Don't: Turn around quickly and whack into a cement elephant with my head.
  3. Do: Write a children's book for class.
Don't: Illustrate it myself. Instead have an amazing Jillian Chupp do all the drawings!
  4. Do: Watch 5Ks!
    Don't: Not watch 5Ks.
  5. Do: File taxes before their due.
Don't: Try doing it on my own. Instead marvel in Mom's amazing tax abilities.
Yes, these are all true.

I really did accidentally buy buttermilk for my cereal over Easter Break. (It's okay, you can laugh... I laughed shortly after I realized what I'd done). With the rescuing of the Schreiners I didn't starve over break though. I was invited to several good meals including Easter dinner. It was a huge blessing! And I still have a carton of buttermilk in the fridge if anyone has any good ideas for using it.

Also, I really did hit my head pretty hard on a cement elephant at Collidge Park. I still have the little lump and mark on my eyebrow to prove it. Thanks to Damarise and Davey's quick ice getting skills and Micah and Janessa's waiting on the grass with me, I survived!

I'll blog more about my third point later, but I actually have written a children's book. It was a project we had to do in class, but one that I absolutely loved! I wrote my book in a day and then struggled with illustrating it. And by struggle I mean, my illustrations would have scared away any kid who wanted to read the book! But Jillian Chupp saved the day! I asked her if she would illustrate for me and she said she would. Little did I know how amazing she was at illustrating! I have been blown away every time I look at her drawings. It made my little book come alive.

Watch 5Ks! I have loved watching 5Ks recently. I think it's like the Olympics. I love watching the swimming, gymnastics, ice skating, everything... because it makes me feel like I could do that... even though I never could. Ha. I also love watching 5Ks because I love cheering people on and watching the strength that they have. I got to watch Micah race on Saturday and it was amazing! He did SO well! This Saturday I get to watch Damarise in her second 5K and I am stoked! I love the early Saturday mornings and races. It's a blast!

Lastly, taxes. The only way I survived through today was because of Mom's help with my taxes. Wow! Taxes can be utterly confusing! And it was the first time I'd ever had to do mine. Mom, thank you for staying up way past your bed time and helping me. It was a life saver!

... There are just a few of the highlights (ish) of my past few weeks. Things are picking up pace here and I may not write again til after finals... we shall see.

Winnie-the-Pooh

I got these books in the mail yesterday. I'm going to read them for my children's literature class. Did I have to read these exact books? No. Did I really want to read these books for that class? Yes!
Today is a drizzly day and instead of writing papers, I just want to lie around and read all about the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh. ... Maybe I'll take a study break soon and do just that.

Imani Craft Night

My RA this year, Virginia, is so creative. She can take anything ordinary and transform it into something amazing. When she announced that our hall would have a craft night I was thrilled. I couldn't wait to see what Virginia had planned. And she did not disappoint. :)

We began our night with toilet paper rolls and old (think 1800's old) books. What could we make with those? Well, let me just show you.

First we began by gathering up people. Emily and Katie were happy and ready to go!

Damarise and I were excited to begin.

The craft table with toilet paper rolls.

The craft table with old book pages.

Beautiful, old, Italian sheet music.

The toilet paper rolls were cut up and glued together to create cool designs. (you'll see the finished product later :).

Snowmen from a package that Damarise put together.

Emily. Happy. Caring. Beautiful. Kind.

Bethany. My breakfast buddy. Great friend. Compassionate. Fellow Ed major.

Emily. Sweet. Caring. Loving.

Virginia. Creative. Thoughtful. Lovely.

Damarise. Friend. Sister. Amazing.

Kasey. Thoughtful. Sincere. Sweet.

Kaia. Funny. Sweet. Outgoing.

Kim. Helpful. Watchful. Kind.

Katie. Loving. Amazing Hair Cutter. Thoughtful.

Me. Just... me :)

Some amazing muffins that Virginia made. Did I mention that not only is she super creative, but she is also an amazing baker?!

The needle and thread used to sew together the paper...

In order to make these vintage looking pinwheel type things.

I also made paper cranes with the old paper.

And hung them and the pinwheels under my laugh sign.

As for the toilet paper rolls, here they are. They are hanging up on an empty wall and filling it with Virginia's creative idea. (looks cool eh?)

Creativity, sticky gluey fingers, Christmas music, laughing, talking, and some wonderful hall bonding time–Yah, Imani craft night was great!

Quote from the Books Tuesday

"All of history is moving toward one great goal,
the white-hot worship of God
and His Son among all the peoples of the earth.
Missions is not that goal.
It is the means.
And for that reason
it is the second greatest
human activity in the world."

Quote from the Books Tuesday

Hard to believe Tuesday is already here. Didn't it just feel like yesterday?! I hope you all have had a good Tuesday. I know mine has been good :) I really like my Tuesday/Thursday days. I work from 8:00am-9:30am. Then have Doctrine 1 which is one of my favourite classes. At 1:00pm-2:15pm I have Youth Ministry which is my other favourite class. And then I have Technology for Educators from 2:30pm-3:45pm. It's a long class, but it's good cause I'm in there with friends :)

Anyways, moving on to my quote from the books this week. It's another book or part of a book that I read for Youth Ministry.

"It is fascinating that all ten of the lepers in Luke's story were healed from their disease. All of them received mercy, but only the Samaritan returned to give praise to his healer. Only the outsider was made part of the thankful fellowship. No matter how long we have been a part of that fellowship, no matter how many times we have stood to sing the doxology, we have to remember that by rights we do not belong in this house of the Lord. We were brought there by the mercy of Jesus."-M. Craig Barnes
That is definitely something to give praise and thanks to God for!

Long time...

Wow! I am so sorry I haven't updated in a while! Time is just going by way to fast. Since I haven't updated for about a week, I think an update is due. So how about random things happening in my life right now :)

1. I finished my family Christmas shopping on Thursday! Yay! I am so happy! :)

2. I read a hilarious book on Tuesday! Damarise and I were babysitting the Kern and Morrison kids and I read this book about three time and laughed each time :) It's great!

3. Not sure if I already said this but Damarise and I have bought our tickets to go see Ruth! Yeah! It's a sure thing now! :)

4. Well, the rest of what I will say deserves it's own blog post...

So until then,
tchau :)
